The Umbrella Academy season 3: Release date, plot and latest news

Season 3 sees the Hargreeves children return to the modern-day only to find that they are now living in an alternate timeline, in which the Umbrella Academy is now the Sparrow Academy, and their father Reginald and late brother Ben are still alive.

New cast member Genesis Rodriguez, who plays Sloane Hargreeves, previously explained what fans need to know about the Sparrows, saying: "The Sparrow Academy is a completely different family. Um, equally as dysfunctional. But they really are crime fighters. They’re organised, they have trained their entire lives. And they’ve dedicated their lives to stopping crime. And they’re kind of a big deal."

And there’s another villain to contend with in season 3: the Kugelblitz, which is essentially a black hole threatening to devour all of time and space, with the Umbrella heroes having once again just a few days to prevent it.

So what's going to happen in season 3 and will the originals return to their own timeline?

The Umbrella Academy season 3 release date and time

There's isn't too long to wait!

The Umbrella Academy season 3 landed on Netflix on Wednesday 22nd June 2022 at 8am.

Filming for season 3 wrapped in August 2021.

Steve Blackman, showrunner for The Umbrella Academy, shared a video on Instagram of the main cast members announcing that production had come to an end.

"That’s a wrap of season 3 of Umbrella Academy and I’m stoked ‘cause I can’t wait for you to see it and sad ‘cause I’ll miss everyone," Elliot, who plays Viktor in the show, said.

"Ladies and gentlemen, that is a wrap on season 3 of Umbrella Academy," said Tom Hopper, aka Number One.

Aidan Gallagher, who plays the time-travelling Five, added: "Wow. I don’t think the world’s ready for this. I think it’s our best season yet."

The Umbrella Academy season 3 trailers

The first trailer landed for The Umbrella Academy season 3 back in March 2022, giving fans a look at the Sparrows and the Hargreeves going head-to-head in tense scenes.

The clip is a brief 17-second affair, but gives us a few glimpses of the Hotel Oblivion design behind the characters. Watch below:

A full-length trailer dropped in May 2022, teasing more of the face-off between the Sparrows and the Hargreeves.

Crucially, the clip reveals that another apocalypse is on its way, and The Umbrella Academy has once again just a few days to prevent it, but will they succeed? Watch below:

Netflix unveiled another clip as part of Geeked Week in June 2022, showing the Umbrella heroes hiding from the Sparrows in a location recommended by Klaus – a dilapidated hotel named Obsidian.

A Klaus informs the rest of the Academy in the below video, the hotel once "played host to world leaders – Roosevelt, Gandhi, Stalin, Gorbachev, Castro, King Olaf of Norway, one of the Kim Jongs, Tito, Dalai Lama, Elvis, and not one, but two Kardashians, allegedly".

Now he reckons, "she's just a flophouse – a party house for those of us not looking to be judged". Watch below:

Most of the key members of The Umbrella Academy cast will be returning for season 3, with Netflix having confirmed that Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H Min, Ritu Arya and Colm Feore are all set to reprise their roles.

Page came out as trans in December 2020 and Netflix confirmed in March 2022 that the series will also see Page's character transition and will now be named Viktor Hargreeves.

In a statement to AV Club, Netflix confirmed that Page's character "will come out as transgender in season 3 and be henceforth known as 'Viktor Hargreeves.'"

The involvement of Kate Walsh has not been confirmed and given that her character The Handler was killed off in season 2, a return might not be on the cards, but there's always a chance she'll be back – she's survived certain death in the past, after all.

Jordan Claire Robbins, Adam Godley and Ken Hall could also all be back for more.

What's more, the core cast will be joined by a number of new cast members including Britne Oldford, Justin Cornwell, Genesis Rodriguez, Cazzie David, and Jake Epstein, who will play members of the Sparrow Academy, which was given a mysterious introduction in season 2.

What will happen in The Umbrella Academy season 3?

Not much in the way of plot information has been given away at this stage, but there are a number of possible directions the show could choose to go in.

For example, could The Handler come back from the dead armed with a brand new evil plan? Could her daughter Lila use her powers against the Hargreaves siblings, or will she join forces with the Academy? And for that matter, what is the Sparrow Academy, which was introduced at the end of series two?

However, we do know that one storyline will see The White Violin transition and be depicted as a trans man named Viktor Hargreeves.

Last year, Tom Hopper teased ideas for season three, telling RadioTimes.com: “There’s a whole host of new characters potentially, and new relationships, and a whole new world again.”

“That’s what I love about each season – it puts us into a whole new world and presses the reset button again, rather than just carrying on where we left off,” he added.

Hopper gave Collider an update in April 2021, suggesting that delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic had allowed the Umbrella Academy writers to "really refine" this year's scripts into something "really special".

"The scripts are so great, season three, it's really such a joy to be doing it," Hopper said. "I feel very privileged to be a part of this show. And I think the best thing really is that we're all so comfortable with each other now. So it feels like we can really hit the ground running from a creative standpoint."
